PUNK FUNK

More than just Bad Brains—a lot more

With this year’s lineup pushing the pseudo-genre in every direction imaginable, the name Afro-Punk Festival seems more open-ended than ever. On Saturday, Santigold headlines on the strength of a debut album that includes production from both Diplo and Chuck Treece of Bad Brains, a band whose aggressive sonics are shirked entirely by chill opener Toro y Moi. Then, on Sunday, Janelle Monáe returns to the festival with her androgynous, Fritz Lang–influenced reto-futurism, before Cee-Lo concludes the weekend’s events, presumably by using a pre-punk, Motown-influenced sound to get a park full of people to shout that quintessential punk declaration, “Fuck you.”
