Polanski’s world is predicated on violent absurdity and, closely adapted from Wladyslaw Szpilman’s Holocaust memoirs, his Cannes prizewinner exhibits an admirable economy and maintains tremendous momentum—at least for its first half. Still, no filmmaker is more entitled to this material.
