When Toro Y Moi released 2009’s “My Touch” EP, the scene that would soon coalesce under the unfortunate moniker “chillwave” was little more than kids around the country uploading loose home recordings to their social media platform of choice. (You know Toro’s been around the block because his remains Blogger.) Whereas the songs on “My Touch” drifted along on a sonic lazy river, the new Underneath the Pine, his second long-player, is more grounded. “New Beat,” the closest thing the record has to a hit, even embraces a funk geared towards the body, something the more ethereal earlier music tended to ignore.
