Dir. Fei Mu (1948). Tian Zhuangzhuang broke a decade of silence with the tale of sickly young landowner, his unhappy wife, and their robustly progressive friend; his source, Fei Mus original is stranger, starker, and less subtle than the remake, closer in mood to Strindberg than Chekhov.
