The songs on The Year of Hibernation, Youth Lagoon's debut, tend to open with a mawkish timidity: a clutch of nervous chords, pianos echoing in a cavernous space, Trevor Jenkins' faux falsetto stumbling in pigeon-toed semi-circles. Doubt and hesitation then give way, gradually and gracefully, to plangent laptop mope-pop so world-beating it could be repurposed to score a sport biopic. What's shocking is that somehow the ascendant arcs that the Boise native createsarcs that touch on gospel soul, synth-pop, the avant-garde, and music-box chimesdont sound inevitably rote but invincibly resilient.
