Indie duo Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner are partners through marriage and music, which (like the not-quite-played-out DIY electro-pop of their music) would be kitschy if they hadn’t been at both for over a decade now. Although the duo briefly swapped out the electric organ for plain old keys and deflated their overripe “joycore” tendencies to mere pop, September’s Mountaintops celebrates the Mates’ return to their pleasantly off-putting formula of hollered lyrics, quirky song structures, and harmonies that vacillate between a-little-too-sweet and a-little-too-dissonant.
