ONCE UPON A NIGHTMARE

Children's stories return to their eerie roots

Before they appeared in Technicolor with gossamer-voiced princesses and dancing baby animals, most fairy tales were written to be creepy and violent. In the original versions, Cinderella's stepsisters cut off their toes to make the glass slipper fit, and the Little Mermaid's feet bleed every time she dances with the prince. Tales from classic storytellers such as Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm will come alive in all their malicious glory for the Nightmare: Fairy Tales Haunted House. The attraction consists of a forest where visitors wander from cottage to cottage, each house an amped-up and scary version of a well-known children's story. The Nightmare company hires actors to perform the stories, so the event might have a more theatrical quality than your average bloody-zombie-jumps-on-you-and-then-runs-away haunted house. Also included in the ticket price is a second attraction, a 5-D performance called The Experiment.
