More About

Though the Bowery is now home to such upscale fare as Daniel Boulud's DBGB instead of CBGB, the neighborhood's underground artistic spirit is still very much alive at the Howl! Arts Project 2011, a whole month of theater, performance art, music, dance, film, and comedy from new and veteran artists to benefit those who make art in the East Village and L.E.S. For a primer on the neighborhood's storied history and legends, the schedule couldn't be more fun. Events include a screening of Lech Kowalkski's 1987 Story of a Junkie (Oct. 7); a staged reading of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane with Warhol Superstar Penny Arcade (Oct. 9); an evening of documentaries on Nan Goldin, Basquiat, and NYC graffiti legends (Oct. 13); a performance of Vice Palace: The Cockettes' Last Musical (Oct. 21-22) by the Thrill Peddlers; and a documentary on Robert Mapplethorpe (Oct. 28).
Oct. 1-31, 2011
