Acclaimed Dutch director Ivo van Hove likes to go the movies. After making a splashliterally, in the case of his bathtub-set A Streetcar Named Desirewith reimagined American classics by the likes of ONeill, Williams, and Lillian Hellman, van Hove has turned his attention to art-house cinema with stagings of John Cassavetess Opening Night and Pier Paolo Pasolinis Teorema. In his latest, Cries and Whispers, a part of BAMs Next Wave festival, he theatricalizes Ingmar Bergmans poignant 1972 film about a woman on her deathbed and the sisters and maid who attend her. In adapting the flick, van Hove has altered the palette from red to blue and updated the setting by a century or more. Now if only the Brooklyn Academy of Music would start selling Raisinets.
