Historical sway has much in common with the Hotel California: You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. J.T. Rogers’s new play includes a corps of Afghan freedom fighters who quote the Eagles and Tina Turner. But its larger contention is that you can’t stop the music—that the choices made in the Middle East decades ago continue to resound today. Produced by Lincoln Center and directed by Bartlett Sher, Blood and Gifts takes place between 1981 and 1991, ranging from the U.S. to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Jim Warnock (Jeremy Davidson), a spirited CIA agent, must negotiate among the ISI, the KGB, and MI6, to say nothing of weapons-hungry warlords and the wife he has left at home.
Mondays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Oct. 28. Continues through Nov. 21, 2011
