More About

If you step outside and really listen to your neighborhood, what does it sound like? This is what community groups, made up of professional and amateur noisemakers, tried to answer by recording the sounds unique to their boroughs. Their “sonic portraits” are now being performed in New York Soundscape, a series of five free concerts, one for each borough, that kicked off last week in Brooklyn. It wraps this weekend with the final three concerts. On Friday at 8, Joseph Kubera, a longtime collaborator of John Cage performs 100 x John 1, which uses Cage’s compositional process and the sounds of Staten Island [Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, 718-440-2500]. On Saturday at noon, award-winning electro acoustic multimedia composer Izzi Ramkissoon teams up with the teenagers of Urban Art Beat for their take on Queens [Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Boulevard, Long Island City, Queens, 718-956-1819]. And finally, on Sunday at 4:30, Richard Lainhart will perform 100 x John 2, a tribute to Cage in his 100th birthday year in Manhattan [Union Square, West 14th Street and Fifth Avenue].
