More About

The first time we saw La Strada, a theatrical adaptation of Federico Fellini’s 1954 film, at La MaMa, we were completely captivated by the heart-wrenching tale of Gelsomina, a frail, innocent young woman who is sold by her mother and endures a life of abuse on the road. The culprit, and Gelsomina’s new owner, is the brutish Zampanò, who works as a traveling showman in a circus and makes her part of his act. This Spanish version (which includes English subtitles) returns in a new, intimate setting with a cast that includes Luis Carlos de La Lombana as Zampanò and Nanda Abella as Gelsomina, both of whom bring riveting and passionate performances—so much so that you’ll want to rescue Gelsomina and punch Zampanò in the gut. But please refrain. They’re acting.
Mondays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Nov. 5. Continues through Dec. 22, 2011
