Lupe Fiasco

Lasers started out as a manifesto, but Atlantic Records wrapped it up in so much red tape that anything revolutionary got buried underneath cotton candy synth-pop, Seacrest-ready beats. "The Show Goes On," which went double platinum, might have been an artistic concession, but it works because Lupe remains able fire back from wthin the system. Insidious tracks like "State Run Radio" and "All Black Everything" flip the commercial mandate on its head, using slick devices that wash over you like Drake or Lil Wayne at their poppiest to rail against the status quo with a satirical bite.
