With Teenage Dream, Katy Perry provided the soundtrack to the summer of 2010—releasing the Dr. Luke/Max Martin–produced lead single “California Gurls” in May and follow-up “Teenage Dream” in July—whether we liked it or not. Mostly, we did. Although when she subsequently conquered fall with the Stargate-overproduced “Firework,” she began to wear out her welcome. And when Kanye rhymed “Pockets on Shrek” with “Alien Sex” on winter’s “E.T.,” we threw up our hands and joined the long-overdue backlash. Tonight, Perry headlines Madison Square Garden, giving us a chance to decide once and for all where we stand on one of the most inescapable records of the past few years.
