The Trinidad-Tobago-born trumpeter throws it all in the pot on Kaiso, his recent jazz-tinged calypso release. If Harry Belafonte picked up a trumpet and had a jazz pedigree, it might come out sounding like this. Steeped in the rum-soaked Creole tradition of his youth and the formalism of a Juilliard education, Charles brings a gravity to the carefree music of calypso icons Lord Kitchener, Mighty Sparrow, and Roaring Lion, losing the steel pan and making room for extended improvisation. The cross-cultural blend all feels like endless summer, the type of behind the beat Afro-Caribbean jazz that could ward off the coming icy temperatures.
