More About

Tonight, the Kitchen offers as part of its 40th anniversary celebration an evening with n+1, the Brooklyn-based magazine that is arguably what The New Yorker would be if you subtracted the stuffiness and added a little pizzazz and the occasional f-word. In keeping with the magazine’s assertion that “history isn’t over just yet,” the event is called The History of the Present, and features writers Richard Beck, Elizabeth Gumport, and Kent Russell, whose articles appear in “Conversion Experience,” the 12th and most recent issue of n+1. Much of the issue’s writing presents critiques on modern phenomena that we’ve embraced to the point of forgetting their strangeness. Beck’s essay pegs Pitchfork as “an uncontroversial portrait of contemporary tastes,” and Gumport’s piece bemoans Gchat and Google+. Russell will read from his story “The Gathering of the Juggalos,” about the annual Insane Clown Posse festival in Illinois. Chad Harbach, author of The Art of Fielding and n+1 founding co-editor, leads the talk.
