Rolando, a/k/a Aztec Mystic, is responsible for something rare: A recognizable, beloved techno anthem, the strings-driven, Latin-inflected “Knights of the Jaguar” being one of the most uplifting thing to come out of 1999’s speakers. Sony/BMG tried to cash in on the instant classic by buying the rights from label Underground Resistance, and when Rolando and the militantly independent UR collective refused, the label caused a major scandal by releasing a tone-for-tone cover of the track. Rolando has since broken away from UR, leaving Detroit for Edinburgh, but he’s still putting out gorgeous, moving music. With residents Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter.
