Nope, no pricey badges needed here. The third annual Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Festival is completely free and bigger than ever with more than 75 artists and all the top publishing companies represented. Featured guests this year include Jack Davis, a MAD Magazine legend who became the most successful commercial illustrator of his generation; Brian Ralph, whose graphic novel Daybreak was the sleeper hit of the year; Lisa Hanawalt, whose comic strip runs in The Believer; and C.F., the artist-musician behind the fantasy graphic novel Powr Mastrs. Because of the success of last year’s festival, this year’s event is taking over both levels of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and various other venues, with panels at Union Pool; the exhibit “Drawing Pop Culture: The Art of Jack Davis” at Scott Eder Gallery; comics-related films at the Spectacle Theater; and, on Sunday, a graphics and theater performance event at the Brick Theater. Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Akashic, and PictureBox are among the publishers who will host artists, including Adrian Tomine, Dash Shaw, and Gary Panter.
