More About

“Jealous love/Ashes and fire/Pain and sin/All of this exists/All of this is sorrowful/All of this is fado,” sang the legendary Amalia Rodrigues in Tudo Isto e Fado, a sentiment that this two-night Next Wave Festival event celebrating the past, present, and future of Portugal’s deliciously doleful national music has taken as its rallying cry. Young Portuguese guitar virtuoso Ricardo Parreira leads the group Lisboa Soul, which anchors tonight’s gaze into fado’s emotional abyss alongside the sublime male crooner Caman. Several stylistic preconceptions are fated to be overturned tomorrow, however, when the quartet Deolindo transforms fado into a flexible vessel for humor, irony, and social satire. They’re joined by the electric quartet Amalia Hoje (Amalia Today), whose 2009 hit album consisted of electronic and rock remakes of Rodrigues’s greatest hits.
Fri., Dec. 2, 8 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 3, 8 p.m., 2011
