When Mx. Justin Vivian Bond (who goes by the pronoun "V"sang the original tune "The New Economy"on WNYC's Soundcheck recently, it might as well have been on their show Marketplace instead. Bond's musical selections, both original and covers, frequently deal with the down-and-out: hustlers, crack whores, and especially those struggling through the current, dismal economy. But the news isn't all bad--Bond has been tickling us with wry doses of reality for the past four years in V's annual holiday show at Abrons Arts Center. This year, in Mx. Bond's Austerity Measures: A Snow Job for the Masses, Bond treats us to political satire and interpretations of Kate Bush, LCD Soundsystem, and Sparklehorse. As Bond tells us, V hopes to give the audience as good of a time as I possibly can short of offering individual lap dances.
