If Some Loud Thunder was CYHSY’s rough five o’clock shadow, 2011’s Hysterical comes as the aftershave. All of the abrasive elements that detracted earlier listeners have been smoothed over with synthesized strings and straightforward song composition revolving around sweeping melodies and insistent rhythm guitars. Even Ounsworth’s voice somehow got less jarring. But at the same time that CYHSY now delivers something closer to paradigmatic indie rock, it comes at the expense of that endearingly obnoxious edge that made them more than just background music at an Urban Outfitters.
