Though the enigmatic photographer Diane Arbus died in 1971 at the age of 48, fans of her startling portraits of offbeat characters can still find new insights into her process. At Aperture and the School of Visual Arts’ An Evening With Diane Arbus and Marvin Israel, you can catch “A Slide Show and Talk by Diane Arbus,” a 1970 audio recording in which she discusses her craft using her own work and other photographs from her collection to illustrate her points. The piece will be accompanied by Neil Selkirk’s short documentary Who Is Marvin Israel?, about the life and work of the artist, art director, and teacher who influenced Arbus and Richard Avedon, among many others. The program coincides with the release of Diane Arbus: A Chronology. co-authored by Doon Arbus, Arbus’s eldest daughter, and Elisabeth Sussman, a photography curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
