It’s an occasional headscratcher: are they a groovy blowing band or a trio of stealth abstractionists? The big picture says both, while the new *Live At Smalls* nudges ‘em towards the former. Despite a Ra-ish opening to “Milestones” by Larry Goldings, the guitar/organ/drum combo applies itself to some funk-flecked swing that makes Cole Porter blow a kiss to Percy Mayfield. Pure pleasure.
