Muthafuckin’ eXquire represent New York’s new hip-hop underground, it’s an underground that remains dedicated to the styles, flows, and characters of the city’s former mainstream. Take, for instance, the latter’s “Lou Ferrigno’s Mad,” a Flatbush Avenue banger that drops inside jokes referencing, say, Suge Knight’s dis of Puffy at the ’95 Source Awards and ends with the rapper quoting a 50 Cent mixtape line, “It’s a freestyle; what the fuck you want for free!” and chuckling to himself, “I always wanted to say that.” Or the former’s Ghostface-influenced voice and cadence. Tonight at the Highline Ballroom, the two will join forces and bridge the gap to 2012. With DyMe-A-DuZiN.
