Dir. Stanley Kubrick (1975). The loveliest of Kubrick films—indeed, the lone Kubrick movie to invite that adjective—visualizes the late 18th century as a death-haunted realm of perpetual summer, its grand empty spaces inhabited by the zombie likes of Ryan O’Neal and Marisa Berenson. Barry Lyndon could be Kubrick’s masterpiece; certainly this cerebral, melancholy action film represents the height of his craft.
