Late last week, restaurateur Chris Cannon announced that his restaurants, Alto and Convivio, would be closing their doors for good. Cannon, who recently split from chef-partner Michael White, says the reasons were “unforeseen business circumstances.”
Diner’s Journal received a statement from Cannon’s law firm that read:
Management tried to avoid taking this action and appreciates the dedication of, and exemplary service provided by, its staff and the loyal patronage of its customers. Mr. Cannon is focusing his immediate attention on the orderly winding down of these businesses, but in the future hopes to reenter the NYC restaurant market.
For now, according to the law firm, the restaurants’ management is helping staff find new positions where possible. It also emphasized that the lawsuit accusing Cannon of misappropriating tips among other wage-law violations was not at all related to the closures, despite the fact that inside sources told Eater legal costs were definitely a factor.
