Eleven years ago, a group of seven guys played a small prank: They rode the subway with no pants. Since then the No Pants Subway Ride has grown steadily each year from 30 participants to 300 to more than 3,000 pantless riders last year. Improv Everywhere, the New York City–based “prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places,” founded by Charlie Todd, organizes this mission, which involves random passengers who act as if they don’t know each other and board a subway car at separate stops without pants. It’s a most simple gesture that takes a lot of balls to do. And, given that it’s the middle of winter, it also takes a certain amount of craziness, which is fortunately something we New Yorkers take great pride in.
