Head into ‘Deep Space’ with François K.

François Kevorkian has been at the center of dance music since he immigrated to NYC from Armenia in the mid ’70s. The inspired remixer’s lengthy DJ résumé includes Paradise Garage, Studio 54, and Body & Soul, but his repertoire extends far beyond classic house. Kevorkian’s sprawling sets at his long-running Deep Space party are made up of anything that fits his notion of “deep,” venturing from reggae and soul to minimal techno to the latest in bass. Deep Space’s never-disappointing special guests are from a diverse range of genres (young local DJs from Turrbotax appeared earlier this month), but they always share his love of expansive interstellar sounds in some sense. Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins is no exception. Whether exploring electro in Cybotron or as Model 500, or perfecting techno purism as Infinity, Atkins has always had a keen vision of the connection between a faltering industrial city and the liberating promise of futurism.
