It's fittingly ironic that the single “Popular” made '90s rockers Nada Surf exactly that, with singer-guitarist Matthew Caws’s deadpan delivery and sardonic lyrics about teen angst epitomizing what the burgeoning alt rock/grunge scene was all about. Decades later the group is touring in promotion of a new album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy, whose finger-picked single “When I Was Young” sounds like background music to a TV drama. Although they seem to have swapped their punk influence for commercial-success-influence, they still have a solid set worth checking out. With Palomar.
