As a young man, the late French artist Jean Dubuffet had a love/hate relationship with art. His doubt for the value of art resulted in his quitting art school in 1918, and starting and quitting again in the ’30s, only to return to painting full-time in 1942 with the aim to never conform to standards. The rebel artist, known for his primitive and childlike art, coined the term “art brut” (“raw art”) or what is now known as outsider art, pieces created by nonprofessionals who work outside the aesthetic norms. Pace’s new exhibit “The Last Two Years” features about 20 pieces representing his exhilarating final works before his death in 1985, including the series Non-Lieux, which means “no verdict.”
