This diverse Queens-based collective of mostly Colombian musicians mixes African-based styles like champeta and porro brass band music with postpunk jazz reminiscent of '80s British groups like Pigbag and Rip Rig + Panic. The octet's deep, sometimes dubby sound tears through the fabric of tradition with drums, electronics, horns, and a clarinet that adds a klezmer tinge. Their recent Makumbala is a pay-what-you-want delight.
