Kieran Hebden’s turn-of-the-century Four Tet albums—the jazz-blissed bedroom hip-hop thesis that is Dialogue and the folktronica-founding Pause and Rounds—established him as a towering talent, if maybe an ivory-towering talent. His studious grooves came across more as witty new fusion than burning dancefloor hedonism, and his work with Sunburned Hand of the Man, Thom Yorke, and Steve Reid certainly confirmed his headiness and heaviness. But his DJ sets are a different thing entirely. His 1995 DJ-Kicks contribution branched well beyond the IDM and spacey roots one might have expected, and last year’s FabricLive installment leaped into even more bodily territory. The mix documented Hebden following up his work with dubstep’s Burial by traipsing eagerly across the garage and broken-beat continua while teasing out the subtly complex rhythms and atmosphere that have always defined Four Tet. Last spring, he
delivered a delicious, diverse set to residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin’s daytime, outdoors Mister Sunday party; this appearance at Mister Saturday Night might be even better.
