More About

"Hubert was Wolf, Wolf was Hubert," said legendary blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin of his two decade partnership with Howlin' Wolf. Credited for the guitar line on "Smokestack Lightning," one of the most recognizable blues riffs, Sumlin played with more heart and intensity than just about anyone, until his heart finally gave out in December. (He died virtually penniless—Sumlin received no royalties—so the Rolling Stones covered his funeral costs.) A guitar god's guitar god, his influence cannot be overstated, with the likes of Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy, and others from the rock pantheon turning out to pay tribute.
