More About

If you were mowed over by a gaggle of skinny, Manolo-wearing, BlackBerry-wielding types rushing around Lincoln Center this week, you know what a spectacle New York Fashion Week has become. But it wasn’t always the case. In the ’70s and ’80s, shows often took place in rundown loft spaces, nightclubs, or university auditoriums—a far cry from the glamorous shows happening in Europe at the time. How the city grew to rival London, Paris, and Milan is the story of James Belzer’s The Tents: The NY Fashion Week Documentary, now screening in an exclusive two-night engagement at Tribeca Cinemas. Fashion-world insiders including Nina Garcia, Betsey Johnson, and our own Michael Musto tell how the arrival of the tents at Bryant Park in the ’90s put the city on the glittery fashion map and how the move to Lincoln Center in the fall of 2010 did away with that old Fashion Week thrill one used to get each season when the tent-construction crews arrived on 42nd Street.
Thu., Feb. 16, 8 p.m.; Fri., Feb. 17, 8 p.m., 2012
