Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid has done much to advance awareness of black musicians over the years, having co-founded the Black Rock Coalition, which promotes the development, exposure, and acceptance of “black alternative music.” Tonight, he’s widening his scope to shine a light on pop-culture mythologies about Africa with his multimedia performance “Artificial Afrika.” In the show, Reid presents his own art, collaborates with South African freestyle rapper and throat singer Akim Funk Buddah and DJ and drummer Leon Lamont, as he debunks the ways literature, the movies, and the media, from the works of Joseph Conrad to the lyrics of Bob Dylan, have misrepresented the continent.
