More About

The controversial Tokyo-based artist collective Chim↑Pom are known for pulling off guerrilla art stunts that aim to shine a light on the social issues of the day. (For instance, to call attention to their city's rat infestation, they transformed dead rats into the famous yellow-colored Pokemon called Pikachu and set them around the streets.) After the earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan last March, the artists headed to the wiped-out fishing village of Soma City, Fukushima, to do something positive for the locals who stayed behind to clean and rebuild. The result is the video KI-AI 100 (100 Cheers), which is now being shown at MOMA PS1. Employing a traditional martial-arts technique used to focus warriors for battle, the artists led the group of villagers in a round of shouting out 100 cheers and wishes for reconstruction. One says, "We won't be defeated!" One says, "I want to eat good fish!" And, humorously, one says, "I'm going to find a girlfriend!" Check it out now through April 23 and leave feeling energized.
Mondays, Thursdays-Sundays, 12-6 p.m. Starts: Feb. 26. Continues through April 23, 2012
