Although she drowned at 27 in a flash flood in the North African desert, the Swiss explorer Isabelle Eberhardt had experienced more adventures in her short life than most of us ever will. Born in Geneva in 1877, she traveled to Algiers at the age of 20 with her mother, where they both converted to Islam. Shortly thereafter, both her parents died, and Eberhardt took to traveling across North Africa disguised as a man and survived an assassination attempt. Sounds like a fascinating story, no? Brooklyn composer Missy Mazzoli thought so. Her new multimedia opera Song From the Uproar—The Lives and Deaths of Isabelle Eberhardt combines music and original films inspired by the writings of this radical woman. Gia Forakis directs.
