More About

With their debut EP The Grid, Pop. 1280 of New York matched the dissonance of early Sonic Youth (particularly if you add some bass and slow those first few albums to Birthday Party tempos) with thematic interests of later records like Daydream Nation (particularly its William Gibson–influenced “The Sprawl”). On this year’s The Horror, however, the band grew less conceptual and even more bleak, letting go of some of that Gibsonian wonkery and turning innocent dance moves (“hips to the right and hips to the left”) into totalitarian marching orders. The guitars, meanwhile, remain as loud as ever. With Velvet Condom and Bootblacks.
