Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s 2010 film Howl starred James Franco as poet Allen Ginsberg, but artist Eric Drooker’s animation of the titular poem was a highlight of the film. No stranger to Ginsberg (he illustrated the 1996 volume Illuminated Poems), Drooker layers the ghostly clothes of jazz and sculpts the towering, bullheaded Moloch, vast stone of war. The multimedia exhibit The Art of Howl shows how poetry becomes motion, with character design drawings, storyboards, animation key frames and concept art, Ginsberg’s own photos, and images from the subsequent graphic-novel adaptation, as one of the best minds of a generation interprets another.
