This pianist is currently making a mark with saxophonist Tim Berne's Snakeoil, and Berne’s rigorous flow of phrases fits snuggly in Mitchell's wheelhouse. That being said, Mitchell’s own music can be thick with action as well, filled with repeated swirls of sound pushed forward by a physical attack he shares with his drummers. This duets gig is novel because he'll be accompanied solely by percussionists, first Ches Smith, then Dan Weiss.
