For the uninitiated, a “criterium” is a bike race held on a short course (usually less than 5 kilometers) on closed-off city streets. The early-season Grant's Tomb Criterium is highly anticipated by racers of all skill levels because, as one biker told us last year, “You can’t beat the combination of technical and power elements and awe-inspiring views.” Presented by Columbia University Cycling, the race features both collegiate and USCF racing with categories for beginners. The .9-mile course twists around Grant’s Tomb, and there are lots of spots for spectators to enjoy the competition. Waves start at 7:30 a.m., 10, and 2:45 p.m., so you can watch the bikers taking some great turns around the tomb all day. Most fun: the final sprints around the memorial.
