Bands show record shops some love

When Jack White said, "What a shame to leave a child, or worse, a generation
orphaned from one of life's great beauties," was he talking about the Grand Canyon? Mount Everest? The Great Barrier Reef? No. He was discussing the value of record stores, those special places where young people used to spend entire weekends trolling for rare imports and new releases. Now we have Record Store Day, a holiday of sorts started in 2007 to get young folks off their computers and back into physical record shops with promises of special events and giveaways. Today, we recommend stopping in at Sound Fix (44 Berry Street, Brooklyn, 718-388-8090) in Williamsburg, where Mates of State will be performing at 7:30 and signing copies of their special Record Store Day album of cover songs. Or head to Other Music (15 East 4th Street, 212-477-8150) for DJ sets from Ex Cops, Black Dice, and Four Tet and other special guests; plus, coffee service at 11 a.m. from La Colombe. Go to recordstoreday.com for a full list of participating venues.
