Robert Ashley

There's a valedictory quality to this ceaselessly renewing 82-year-old's latest work, The Old Man Lives in Concrete, which originated at La Mama in 2006 (as simply Concrete) and returns in radically different form. Over the course of four nights, Ashley and his four singers will speak-sing eight "Portraits," along with several shorter "Incidents," involving the true stories of "ordinary people who are spiritually divine." The music, consisting of orchestral samples shaped by Ableton Live software, surrounds these secret tellers like the air they breathe.
