VISIONS OF AFRICA

New cinema from the continent

One hundred years ago, the African National Congress was created to establish rights for black South Africans. Fifty years ago, Algeria, Burundi, Jamaica, Rwanda, and Uganda all gained independence. And this year, Barack Obama, of Kenyan ancestry, is up for re-election. The New York African Film Festival celebrates these milestones and more with the best in African cinema. Don't miss hip-hop artist Nneka in the centerpiece selection, Relentless, about lovers trying to survive in war-torn Sierra Leone (Friday). Also catch The Education of Auma Obama (Thursday), which profiles the president’s older half-sister.
Mondays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: April 11. Continues through April 17, 2012
