RISING SON

Asia Society presents Arif Lohar

Judging by his revelatory Coke Studio performance of "Alif Allah Chambay Dey Booti/Jugni" (8 million YouTube views and counting) in 2010, jovial Pakistani singing sensation (and sometime actor) Arif Lohar is among the more convincing Sufi-pop heirs to the late fiery and indefatigable qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Accompanying himself percussively with the long metal tongs called chimta, the devout son of deceased singer and poet Alam Lohar draws deeply from within the Punjabi tradition while collaborating ever more frequently—150 albums into his career—with South Asian beat meisters like Dr. Zeus and Mukhtar Sahota. Arooj Aftab, a progressive Pakistani hybrid of Abida Parveen and Sade, joins him here at the latest edition of the Asia Society’s ongoing "Creative Voices of Muslim Asia" series.
Fri., April 27, 8 p.m.; Sat., April 28, 8 p.m., 2012
