If you’ve lived in NYC long, you know the city has excelled at opening parks, walkways, and bike paths. And today is the largest cycling event in America, the Five Boro Bike Tour, an amazing sight as 32,000 cyclists take on a 40-mile, traffic-free route that starts near Battery Park, tracks out to the Verrazano Bridge, and winds up on Staten Island, where there is a festival before the three-mile ride to the ferry and home. (Although registration is closed, volunteers are still needed, and watching is highly recommended.) If you are new to urban cycling, try the NYCC Social Bike Ride, a monthly event sponsored by the New York Cycling Club. Shorter than most rides, it moves at a leisurely pace and gives you a chance to meet other people who urban bike as you learn the ropes.
