Truth in advertising doesn’t get much better than the name of Brian Shimkovitz’s blog, Awesome Tapes From Africa, where Shimkovitz has spent the last seven years posting MP3s of local, fun, and sometimes funky music he’s purchased on trips to the continent. Raising further awareness for the artists documented, he’s begun playing DJ sets—using tape players, no less—which he will be doing tonight (and several times in the near future, if you check his blog) at 285 Kent. Never before have ethnomusicology and a dance party coexisted so awesomely.
