More About

The first hours of the Chhandayan group's annual All-Night Concert are for socializing, enjoying an early evening raga or two, and snacking on chaat and saag paneer in the Society's basement. It's after midnight, usually around 3 or 4 in the morning, when myriad small gestures of Hindustani (Northern India) classical music coalesce into the sort of transcendent ritualistic experience common on the subcontinent but a rare and beautiful thing in our toddling town. Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, one of India's greatest singers, and Pandit Rajeev Taranath, a renowned sarod disciple of Ali Akbar Khan, are the eight-hour marathon's after-midnight stars this year. Bansuri flutist Pandit Ronu Majumdar and singers Sanhita Nandi and Paromita Das will perform earlier in the evening at this casually devout Hindustani rave.
