With a pirouetting line capable of capturing the subtleties of performance, Al Hirschfeld cemented his reputation as the foremost illustrator of the New York theater scene and beyond. The Society of Illustrators exhibit Al Hirschfeld: Characterist displays 25 of his drawings from 1937 to 2000, some of which have never before been exhibited, depicting performers such as Groucho Marx, Boris Karloff, Nancy Walker, Ruth Gordon, and Vincent Price with grace and sharp-eyed humor. Finding his daughter Nina’s name hidden in the details is a fun parlor game, but it’s also an invitation to pore over every virtuoso stroke of Hirschfeld’s pen.
Mondays-Sundays, 11 a.m. Starts: May 17. Continues through June 2, 2012
