Back in 1903, the Lyric Theatre on West 42nd Street played host to several Shakespearean works and later to films, until it closed in 1992. The only treasures that survived its demolition were two scratched-up 35mm films, rescued from a dumpster parked in front of the theater. Now you can see these bizarre gems at tonight’s Grindhouse Double Features at 92YTribeca. The first is the $10,000-budget B-movie Bloodthirsty Butchers (1970), director Andy Milligan’s twisted take on the legend of Sweeney Todd. The second feature is Ted V. Mikels’s The Corpse Grinders (1971), a completely grossed-out but awesome movie about a cat-food company that makes its product out of dead bodies. And once the cats start acquiring a taste for human flesh, you better believe a full feline attack on society ensues.
